God helps Beowulf. Maybe not "punch by punch" in the fight but God has given him the courage, intelligence and strength to overcome Grendall. God determines what happens to us as well-he arranged the world and obstacles in such a way that we will have to make decisions that in a way makes our own fate. God is always there looking on and because we are not his puppets we determine our outcomes by what we invest in our actions. For example, in a sports game, you win because of the skill and effort you put into winning. God does not just decide who is going to win based on his favorite team. He does however, give the teams the natural skills they have and the determination that drives them to win. We as people are saved and helped by our initiative. Those who have a strong initiative and strive to achieve things, God will help. He is more willing to open doors for those people, as He likes to see people succeed. God will still help someone who sits around and takes no action but He can help them more effectively if they do work for what they want. This goes along with the phrase "God helps those who help themselves." This doesn't of course mean that God won’t help those people who do sit around and beg for others to work for them. God helps everyone; it may just be more prominent in the lives of those who work for their outcomes.
It is not fate that someone finds a $100 bill on the ground or that someone gets in a car crash; it is being in the right place at the right/wrong time. Your initiative is what got you to that place, not fate. God planned for you to be in whatever place you are in at whatever time for a reason. Its not karma or really even luck, everything is planned. Sometimes this idea is hard to clench but it is the way God created His world to Work. God is the ultimate ruler, and He gives His people His gifts to carry out His ultimate plans.
It's so muddy, isn't it? Where does our initiative end, and God's working begin? Interestingly enough though, the older I get... the more I REVEL in responding to those questions with a great big shrug.
ReplyDeleteI know He calls me to action. I know He calls me to love. I know He loves me. And that's enough.
I don't have to know exactly how it all works, because just knowing THAT-- is enough.
Great, deep post Jordan.
